NFOs fail to deliver big-time

Well, the reasons for this tumble are simple – more than the fresh influx of funds, it is the money moving out from the existing funds to the newly launched The new expansion: NFOs – Non-Flying ObjectsNew Fund Offers (NFO). Over the past one & half years, the market has been witnessing a bull run with Sensex thundering across the 15,000 milestone; but to the agony of investors, more than 60% of the NFOs have had a trailing record against their benchmarks (the table alongside has startling performance results). UTI Contra, Tata Contra, Sundaram BNP, Stanchart Classic, SBI, Reliance, Magnum, take a name & we’ll show you blood on Dalal Street. Gauri Magar of Arihant Capital Market, puts across her views while speaking to B&E, “They are changing their portfolio on a monthly basis, investors are looking for short term gains & hence you have AUMs eroding, NFOs must be looked as a long term investment...” Easier said than done. If one year is not considered long term, then pray, tell us what else can be?

Energetic, fresh and relaxed by definition happen to be abstract nouns

Be it any kind of waste, it is being treated at source so that it’s easier to use further or to dispose it off . Blowing natural air that passes through air filters is used for the building, again saving on electricity The inverted cone!(Wipro)by not using air-conditioners. From rainwater harvesting to treatment of water that can be further used; from using regional or recycled material to providing insulation in roof and walls, the focus was on being resource efficient on every stage.

Though the cost of building goes up (but as a percentage of actual cost of the normal building it hardly touches double digits) the savings are humongous and to prove that Wipro have established the fact. According to an audit conducted by Tata Energy Resources Institute of Wipro’s building, there was a 46% saving in the electricity bill. Besides, Wipro expects to recover the extra cost incurred in 3-4 years.

You've got mail... and the world's got warmer!

Buy y a PC, plant a tree. Sure, it’s a gimmick, but as gimmicks go, it’s a good one. I didn’t see Michael Dell’s “Plant a Tree for Me” announcement at CES this year, but I was told the auditorium was pretty much empty. That’s too bad, because his programme could go a long way towards solving a serious problem. We live in a culture that never powers down, and all that power that we consume eventually takes a heavy toll on the environment we live in.

From now on, whenever you buy a Dell PC, you’ll have the option of donating a few dollars towards planting new trees. And it’s not for nothing. A PC requires electricity, and generating electricity typically involves spewing a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. As Al Gore’s documentary An Inconvenient Truth makes pretty clear, this is a big problem, especially for people living at sea level. New trees can off set some of those carbon emissions.

Tribal tribulations

Tribals in Tribal tribulations:- image by IIPM PUblicationIndia have been badly hurt rather than being helped by India’s pursuits of development. The suffering of almost 80 million tribals in India has increased with the increase in large industrial, mining and irrigation projects, leading to massive deforestation and displacement. The fast depletion of forests due to industrialisation and SEZs has affected the life of around 533 tribes.
