Hollywood’s brawn brigade...

They are the men who gave Hollywood its brawn. These are not your ordinary action heroes, they are action heroes on steroids (oops, that was

totally pun unintended!). Both were born in the month of July and while one brought a cyborg to life through the Terminator movie franchise, the other epitomised the underdog hero so well portrayed in the character Rocky Balboa in the Rocky franchise. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone’s immaculately chiseled bodies were synonymous with Hollywood action for good part of the 1980s and 1990s and their box office draw was simply unmatched.

The body building fanatic, Arnold started out from a small hamlet of Thal in Austria, and in

two decades went through an in credible Hollywood tale, catapulting himself to the top of the pile of Hollywood pop action heroes. For a man with an accent and effectively zero acting background, Arnold’s achievement is as remarkable as it is unique. More so considering the fact that he is currently the Governor of the State of California, only the second actor after Ronald Reagan to be elected to that position. “The most perfectly developed man in the history of the world,” was how the Guinness Book of World Records described this man who started out as a bodybuilder, winning the Mr. Europe title followed by Mr. Universe title four times and the Mr. Olympia title seven (!) times, six times in succession from 1970-1975! Mr. Universe was his ticket to America where he chased his dream of becoming an actor. His breakthrough role came in Conan where he played the eponymous character – a role almost modelled after him! Then came the sci-fi Terminator, where his portrayal of the killing machine earned him box office success.

by not using air-conditioners. From rainwater harvesting to treatment of water that can be further used; from using regional or recycled material to providing insulation in roof and walls, the focus was on being resource efficient on every stage.

Though the cost of building goes up (but as a percentage of actual cost of the normal building it hardly touches double digits) the savings are humongous and to prove that Wipro have established the fact. According to an audit conducted by Tata Energy Resources Institute of Wipro’s building, there was a 46% saving in the electricity bill. Besides, Wipro expects to recover the extra cost incurred in 3-4 years.

plant a tree. Sure, it’s a gimmick, but as gimmicks go, it’s a good one. I didn’t see Michael Dell’s “Plant a Tree for Me” announcement at CES this year, but I was told the auditorium was pretty much empty. That’s too bad, because his programme could go a long way towards solving a serious problem. We live in a culture that never powers down, and all that power that we consume eventually takes a heavy toll on the environment we live in.

From now on, whenever you buy a Dell PC, you’ll have the option of donating a few dollars towards planting new trees. And it’s not for nothing. A PC requires electricity, and generating electricity typically involves spewing a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. As Al Gore’s documentary An Inconvenient Truth makes pretty clear, this is a big problem, especially for people living at sea level. New trees can off set some of those carbon emissions.

Tribals in

India have been badly hurt rather than being helped by India’s pursuits of development. The suffering of almost 80 million tribals in India has increased with the increase in large industrial, mining and irrigation projects, leading to massive deforestation and displacement. The fast depletion of forests due to industrialisation and SEZs has affected the life of around 533 tribes.
