In what is threatening to once again draw the Democratic Republic of Congo’s neighbours openly into the conflict and may undo a six-year regional and international endeavour to alleviate the Great Lakes region, fresh fighting has resumed in the Eastern Congo region between government forces and those of Laurent Nkunda.

As reports last came, rebel forces led by the Congolese Tutsi general – head of the National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP), have affirmed an armistice after four days of hostility in the North Kivu province. Congolese soldiers and displaced civilians moved into the province's capital Goma, fleeing advancing rebels.

The fighting has led to the migration of at least 50,000 people, according to UN reports. A crisis sitting of the Security Council late last week has agreed to a non-binding declaration, which condemned the hostility and called upon CNDP to "bring its operations to an end", which they said was creating a "humanitarian catastrophe".....Continue

Employers perferring more of Management Institutes like IIPM

The Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) set a record for itself in campus recruitment with more than 2,000 jobs for its students during the ongoing placement season for the class of 2006-08. The total number of placements by March second week had hit a high of 2,014, highest achieved ever. The highlight of the placement season was that 85 new companies entered the IIPM campus to net the talent for their enterprises, said an IIPM release. More than 10 international placements was the added feature of the season.

More than 600 companies have visited the IIPM campus for recruitment so far, with the first timers like Yes Bank picking up 33 students in early January, Zee Entertainment netting seven, UB Group (King Fisher Airlines) selecting 14 among others.

Satyam Computer Services picked up 60 students on the first day of the placement exercise offering a whopping package of Rs 8.8 lakh per annum, the highest domestic package offer, exceeding the average offer of Rs 5 lakh per annum, said IIPM.

After completing his Management degree from the Motilal Institute of Business Management, Allahabad, Sethi started his corporate journey with Reckitt & Colman of India in 1984 as a Branch Manager for the eastern region. His outstanding performance at the company soon saw him being promoted to the post of National Sales Manager in 1987. He was later transferred overseas and worked in West Africa and Nigeria. In his two decade stint, he has seen the company both through the good and bad times – when the company became a subsidiary of the global FMCG giant Benckiser in 1999 and was renamed Reckitt Benckiser (India) Limited and also when the company’s four-year-old JV with Nicholas Piramal ended in 2001.

However, the dissolution of the JV did not hurt Reckitt Benckiser much, as they got their hands on the prized 65-year-old brand Dettol and Disprin. Keenly understanding the Indian market, Sethi took no time to extend the company’s flagship brand Dettol, which is the leader in the antiseptic market with an 85% market share. The market was soon flooded with Dettol Liquid Hand Wash & Dettol Soap that have managed to find a prominent place in people’s bathrooms. The brand extension strategy was a runaway success as Dettol Liquid Hand Wash created an altogether new segment. It now commands 60% of the market in this new category. In the health soap division too, Dettol Soap accounts for 18% of the market. Explaining the core philosophy that drove his business, “media shy” Chander Mohan Sethi (as he likes to call himself) told B&E, “Challenge in business is continuous and is accompanied by continuous innovation and rejuvenation.”

India’s greater ‘Reliance’ on loans

India Inc. has raised over $8 billion through syndicated loans by way of 33 deals in the first half of 2007, the leader being Reliance Industries. RIL alone mopped up a massive $2.7 billion. Syndicated loans volume of India Inc. was at $8.3 billion for the first half of this calendar year, which showcases a steady growth path over the previous year’s figure of $8.1 billion through 41 deals. Others, which followed the behemoth are, Tata Group raising $400 million, British mobile giant Vodafone and largest lender State Bank of India (SBI), both gathering $300 million each while HDFC (not too far behind) gathered $285 million through syndicated loans.

Hollywood’s brawn brigade...

They are the men who gave Hollywood its brawn. These are not your ordinary action heroes, they are action heroes on steroids (oops, that was totally pun unintended!). Both were born in the month of July and while one brought a cyborg to life through the Terminator movie franchise, the other epitomised the underdog hero so well portrayed in the character Rocky Balboa in the Rocky franchise. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone’s immaculately chiseled bodies were synonymous with Hollywood action for good part of the 1980s and 1990s and their box office draw was simply unmatched.

The body building fanatic, Arnold started out from a small hamlet of Thal in Austria, and in two decades went through an in credible Hollywood tale, catapulting himself to the top of the pile of Hollywood pop action heroes. For a man with an accent and effectively zero acting background, Arnold’s achievement is as remarkable as it is unique. More so considering the fact that he is currently the Governor of the State of California, only the second actor after Ronald Reagan to be elected to that position. “The most perfectly developed man in the history of the world,” was how the Guinness Book of World Records described this man who started out as a bodybuilder, winning the Mr. Europe title followed by Mr. Universe title four times and the Mr. Olympia title seven (!) times, six times in succession from 1970-1975! Mr. Universe was his ticket to America where he chased his dream of becoming an actor. His breakthrough role came in Conan where he played the eponymous character – a role almost modelled after him! Then came the sci-fi Terminator, where his portrayal of the killing machine earned him box office success.

Moreover, with the crew of the American leviathan spending on an average approximately $1 million per day during the four day stay and an almost similar amount is being earned through repairs & maintenance, the Department of Revenue has no reason to complain. The Left parties need to grow up; stop nitpicking & concentrate on drafting better policy to take the nation ahead.

From rainwater harvesting to treatment of water that can be further used; from using regional or recycled material to providing insulation in roof and walls, the focus was on being resource efficient on every stage.

Though the cost of building goes up (but as a percentage of actual cost of the normal building it hardly touches double digits) the savings are humongous and to prove that Wipro have established the fact. According to an audit conducted by Tata Energy Resources Institute of Wipro’s building, there was a 46% saving in the electricity bill. Besides, Wipro expects to recover the extra cost incurred in 3-4 years.

Buy y a PC, plant a tree. Sure, it’s a gimmick, but as gimmicks go, it’s a good one. I didn’t see Michael Dell’s “Plant a Tree for Me” announcement at CES this year, but I was told the auditorium was pretty much empty. That’s too bad, because his programme could go a long way towards solving a serious problem. We live in a culture that never powers down, and all that power that we consume eventually takes a heavy toll on the environment we live in.

From now on, whenever you buy a Dell PC, you’ll have the option of donating a few dollars towards planting new trees. And it’s not for nothing. A PC requires electricity, and generating electricity typically involves spewing a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. As Al Gore’s documentary An Inconvenient Truth makes pretty clear, this is a big problem, especially for people living at sea level. New trees can off set some of those carbon emissions.

Imaginations can run wild, but NDTV is indeed the late entrant in the space, where veterans like Zee and Star rule. Ashish Kaul, Senior VP Corporate Branding, Zee agrees that “having a few big names would not be sufficient for NDTV.” He says, “There are many established entertainment channels and all are revamping themselves to brace competition. Any new entrant will face a huge challenge.” True. It took 6 years for Zee to climb back in the TRPs game and inch closer to Star, which has been reigning the idiot box ever since 2000. What hope does a new entrant (with no prior experience in entertainment) have?

But the NDTV Imagine trio cannot be written off so easily. Already the Ekta magic is not able to keep viewers glued to Star and KBC 3 too was a semi-flop. Viewers are intelligent & clamoring for change. And Dr. Roy’s business acumen, Nair’s creative genius & Johar’s ‘starry’ connections, may deliver just that.

In the light of globalisation, students entering IIPM undergo a 2-3 weeks study tour to a selected country in Australia , Africa, Asia, America , Europe or China . During these 10-15 days the students are taught a special paper on Global Opportunity and Threat Analysis with assistance from faculty of the country visited, whenever available. The idea is to make students aware of how a truly global economy works and also to bring a fresh outlook to life conducive to entrepreneurial learning.

Money, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, DLF Universal, ICICI Prudential, ICICI Bank, Price Water House Coopers were jostling for the zero day at IIPM.

The Indian Institute of Planning and Management(IIPM) has set before it the twin tasks: (1) to reorient education and research towards the needs of both the private and public (government) sectors and (2) to establish the link between the national economic planning and the development of private enterprises in our country. The Indian Institute of Planning and Management aims at initiating training and research on problems of development that must be solved for realizing planned national objectives. Unfortunately education in India has still remained primarily oriented towards the needs of the private sector and has overlooked the specific requirements of the public sector. India has even failed to do justice to the private sector by not properly formulating the basic framework within which they should operate. The scope and role of the Indian private sector, in the context of national economic planning, is quite distinct from that of the foreign private sector firms operating in free market economies originally developed through colonial exploitation.

Problems of development of the private and the public sectors are, therefore, to be studied and analyzed carefully in the background of national economic planning. Otherwise, India would not be able to translate the laudable goals of plans into physical realities, however sophisticated the planning models may be. Despite the basic differences that exist between the private and the public sector, once the strategy for planned development has been formulated, both the sectors must draw up their operational plans in a complementary way to realize the planned objectives. Otherwise, India may find the public and the private sectors working at cross-purposes. Undertaking objective commitments towards these goals, IIPM has set up various Centers to objectively support these goal oriented commitments. Foundations like the Great Indian Dream Foundation also are examples of the effectiveness that such movements can bring about.

As an educational institute, IIPM aims at developing a three dimensional personality in our students. (1) Pursuit of knowledge, (2) commitment to economic, social and cultural uplifting of masses and (3) cultivation of taste for literature, fine arts etc. IIPM's success is seconded by our turning out leaders and entrepreneurs year after year who are committed to the Indian masses and are so urgently needed by the country.

Integrated Programme in National Economic Planning and Entrepreneurship (leading to the award of the BBA degree from IMI): The Bachelor's program at IIPM is ranked amongst the best programs for undergraduates in India. This is a three year full time residential program that leads to the award of the BBA degree from the International Management Institute, Belgium, one of the Europe's leading business schools. European Exchange Program with IMI: Considered one of the most valuable learning experiences at IIPM, all students of IIPM who successfully complete the first year of their programme at IIPM in India are eligible to go to IMI for the duration of one trimester in the second year. The students would stay & study at the Antwerp Campus of IMI in Belgium. IIPM HISTORY

In the mid 1960s, a proposal to set up an Institute under the name of "Institute for Planning and Administration of National Economy" was forwarded to Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, Prime Minister of India and Chairman, Planning Commission, Government of India. A study tour was undertaken under Dr. M. K. Chaudhuri's commission during 1964-65 to acquire first hand knowledge about the working of similar institutions in Europe. A working paper on Regional Planning was circulated under the name of "Indian Institute of Planning" in 1969.

After resigning from Professorship at IIM (Indian Institute of Management) Bangalore, and after having been a Professor at XLRI Jamshedpur, Dr. Chaudhuri took over as Research Professor and founder Director of IIPM in 1973. Incidentally, Dr. Chaudhuri has also been the founder director of management courses at IMT Ghaziabad. At IIPM, the first residential full-time Post-Graduate Diploma Programme commenced on 12th August 1974, with students selected through admission tests and interviews held in New Delhi, Calcutta, Bombay & Bangalore. IIPM pioneered the all India admission procedure by holding admission tests and interviews in 15 centers, namely, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Mumbai (Bombay), Kolkata (Calcutta), Chandigarh, New Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Chennai, Patna & Trivandrum. The institute has, through the experiences of the past decades, accumulated a vast and massive base of knowledge and learning. It has grown in the areas of activities, at the same time maintaining a close connection with various competencies that have working synergies with the core management education area. IIPM's activities now range from education & rural development programmes to management consulting, public relations, marketing consulting, research, training & development, human resources consulting & media consulting.
